A dishwasher that leaves dirty dishes or standing water is giving you a symptom, not a parts diagnosis. Start with settings, loading, and the maintenance your owner's manual permits.
Identify where the cycle goes wrong
Does the dishwasher fail to start, stop after filling, leave water after the cycle, or finish with poor cleaning? Write down the sequence and any display message. That distinction is useful whether the cause is simple loading interference or a fault requiring service.
Check that an item is not preventing the door from closing normally. Review delayed-start and control-lock settings in the manual. If a spray arm is accessible, look for a utensil or tall item obstructing it; do not force a moving part or modify the racks.
Match the symptom with an ordinary check

These checks do not establish that a pump, heater, or control board has failed. They help you rule out ordinary use conditions and explain what the technician should investigate.
Clean a removable filter only as directed
Some dishwashers have a filter intended for owner maintenance. Others use a different arrangement. Find the model's instructions before removing anything, and stop if the directions do not match what you see.
For an owner-removable filter, follow the manual's isolation and removal instructions, rinse it as directed, and reinstall it correctly. Broken glass or sharp debris can be present. Do not reach into hidden areas or dismantle the pump. Bosch's support guidance identifies filter and pump obstruction as possible drainage causes; that does not make pump access a universal DIY task.

Record the exact symptom and cycle stage.

Confirm settings, loading, and permitted filter care.
Reassess
Only resume use if there is no leak, heat, or electrical concern.
Book service
Persistent or recurring symptoms need model-specific diagnosis.
Avoid adding household drain cleaner to the dishwasher or running repeated cycles to “push through” an obstruction. A cycle that ends badly again gives you a reason to stop testing, not a reason to keep trying.
Prepare for a dishwasher repair visit
- Save the model number and display message.
- Note whether the sink drainage changed too, or a disposer was recently installed.
- Explain whether the problem happens with every load.
- Clear the nearby sink cabinet without disconnecting plumbing.
- Mention custom panels, tight cabinetry, or difficult access.
Is a little water at the bottom always a fault?
Check the manual for your model. A normal amount in a sump is different from water covering the tub after a failed drain; describe what you see rather than assuming.
Should I reset an error code first?
Photograph it before doing anything. Follow the model's documented instructions, and do not use repeated resets to ignore a recurring fault.
